Equipment

  • Toaster
  • Sharp knife for slicing

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of whole-grain or sourdough bread toasted to your preference
  • 1 ripe avocado mashed with a fork
  • 4 ounces of smoked salmon thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese optional, for a creamy base
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice to brighten the flavors
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Optional toppings:

  • 2 eggs poached or fried, for extra protein
  • Capers for a briny bite
  • Thinly sliced red onion
  • Fresh dill or chives finely chopped
  • Everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

Step 1: Toast the bread

  • Start by toasting your bread slices until they’re golden and crispy. I like using whole-grain or sourdough for a hearty texture and flavor, but you can use any bread you enjoy.

Step 2: Mash the avocado

  • While the bread is toasting, scoop the avocado into a small bowl. Mash it with a fork until it’s smooth but still slightly chunky. Stir in the lemon juice, and add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste.

Step 3: Spread the base

  • If you’re using cream cheese, spread a thin layer on each slice of toast. This adds a creamy, tangy base that pairs beautifully with the smoked salmon.
  • Then, evenly spread the mashed avocado on top of the cream cheese or directly onto the toast if skipping the cream cheese.

Step 4: Add the smoked salmon

  • Layer the smoked salmon slices over the avocado. I like to fold the salmon slightly for a pretty, textured look, but you can lay it flat if you prefer.

Step 5: Customize with toppings

  • This is where you can get creative! Add your favorite toppings to take your toast to the next level. I love adding a poached egg for extra richness or sprinkling on some capers and everything bagel seasoning for a fun, savory twist. Red onion slices and fresh herbs like dill or chives also add a fresh, vibrant flavor.

Step 6: Serve and enjoy

  • That’s it, you’re done! Serve your smoked salmon avocado toast immediately while the bread is still warm. Pair it with a cup of coffee or tea, and savor every bite.
