  • 6 medium apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted

Prepare the apples

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9x9-inch baking dish. In a large mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and lemon juice. Make sure the apples are evenly coated in the mixture for that perfect sweet and spiced flavor.

Assemble the filling

  • Spread the prepared apples evenly into your greased baking dish. Don’t worry if they seem piled high—the apples will soften and shrink as they bake.

Make the oatmeal crumble topping

  • In a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour the melted butter over the mixture and stir until everything is moistened and crumbly. This oatmeal crumble topping is the secret to that perfectly crunchy apple crisp!

Top and bake
