Ingredients

  • 1 16 ounce package breakfast sausage
  • 1 chopped green onion
  • 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 6 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 2.64 ounce package country gravy mix
  • 6 slices bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (Optional)
  • ½ teaspoon paprika to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C) and grease an 11x8-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  • Brown the breakfast sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it into crumbles as it cooks. Once fully cooked, drain any excess fat.
  • In the prepared baking dish, spread the sausage evenly across the bottom. Sprinkle the chopped green onion on top for added flavor and crunch.
  • Distribute the shredded Cheddar cheese over the sausage layer.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, water, milk, and country gravy mix until smooth and combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the baking dish contents.
  • Scatter the bread cubes over the top, ensuring an even layer. For extra flavor, drizzle melted butter over the bread, then sprinkle paprika for subtle color and spice.
  • Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is golden.
  • Allow the casserole to set for 10 minutes before serving. This helps it hold its shape when sliced.

Notes

Pro tip: When shopping for cheese, grate your own if possible. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can affect how well it melts.
