Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 ¼ cups dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ cups semisweet chocolate chips, divided

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). No need to grease your 9x13-inch baking pan—just leave it ungreased for easy cleanup.
  • Using an electric mixer, beat the butter in a large bowl until it’s smooth and creamy. Add the dark brown sugar and white sugar, mixing until thoroughly combined. Blend in the egg and vanilla extract until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  • In a separate smaller bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, blending well after each addition. Then, fold in 1 ¾ cups of the chocolate chips.
  • Spread the batter evenly into your baking pan, smoothing out the top with a spatula.
  • Bake for 25 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. The center should look set but still slightly soft—it will firm up as it cools.
  • Sprinkle the remaining ¾ cup of chocolate chips over the top and return the pan to the oven for just 1 minute to melt the chocolate.
  • Remove from the oven and use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate into a glossy layer over the bars. Let them cool completely in the pan before slicing into squares.

Notes

After they’ve cooled, drizzle salted caramel sauce over the top for a decadent finish.
