Ingredients

  • 4 medium russet potatoes these are best for baking due to their starchy texture
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter for extra richness
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt to season the skin perfectly
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper optional, for added flavor

Instructions

Preheat your oven

  • Start by preheating your oven to 400°F. This is the sweet spot for achieving a crispy exterior without overcooking the inside.

Prepare the potatoes

  • Wash and scrub your potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a clean towel. Use a fork to poke holes all over each potato—this helps steam escape during baking.

Season the potatoes

  • Rub each potato with olive oil, making sure to coat them evenly. Sprinkle generously with kosher salt, and add black pepper if desired. This step is key to getting that deliciously crispy skin.

Bake the potatoes

  • Place the potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a baking sheet for easier cleanup. Bake for 50-60 minutes, turning them halfway through for even cooking. You’ll know they’re done when the skin is crisp and a knife slides easily into the center.

Serve and enjoy

  • Once baked, let the potatoes cool for a few minutes. Slice them open, fluff the insides with a fork, and load them up with your favorite toppings. Enjoy!
